Did you know that First Lady Jill Biden’s inauguration dress was symbolic?

The traditional inauguration ball did not take place this year because of the pandemic but Dr. Biden and her husband President Joe Biden still dressed up for the TV special, Celebrating America hosted by Tom Hanks.

The first lady wore a silk wool dress under an ivory double-breasted cashmere coat with matching gloves for the occasion. Her evening attire was designed by Gabriela Hearst and featured embroidery of federal flowers from every state and territory of the country.

During the televised special, the first lady wore the coat while watching a performance in the White House together with her family. They also had their photo taken at the Lincoln Memorial where President Biden later delivered a message as part of Celebrating America.

Hearst posted photos of the making of the first lady’s outfit on Instagram and other details about it. She wrote, “The message of unity is the main inspiration for the creation of the ensemble. Unity makes strength and it is needed for the road ahead. The Delaware flower is positioned at the heart level of the first lady, from there, all the other flowers branch out.”

The designer also revealed that it took them around two to four hours to embroider each flower. She added, “Careful placements and color selections were carefully studied for weeks.”

Not only that but inside the coat is a quote by Benjamin Franklin that reflects beliefs Dr. Biden’s as an educator, ‘Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.’

Earlier that day, Dr. Biden wore an ocean blue outfit for the inauguration which was designed by Alexanda O’Neill who founded Markarian. Blue was chosen because it signifies trust, confidence, and stability. A small team carefully and creatively crafted the outfit which was later hand finished by O’ Neill in her studio.

The A-line overcoat looked elegant with its dark blue cuffs and collars. Underneath, the tapered dress featured a chiffon bodice and scalloped skirt hem while the collar glitters with hand-embellished Swarovski crystals. The first lady completed her look with pointed-toe pumps by Jimmy Choo and a matching face mask and gloves.

All in all, during the inauguration  social media couldn’t help but notice how stylish Joe Biden’s family was.
