Oprah Winfrey is the queen of interview but did you know that there was one question she asked an A-list actress that still makes her cringe until today?
The talk show host guested on Rob Lowe’s Literally on Wednesday, May 12 where she spilled that she had one question from a celebrity interview she had years ago that still haunts her today.
Rob mentioned about how he gets annoyed of current late-night talk shows where guests were asked to play silly games and wished they could go back in the past where a celeb would just sit and tell stories. Then he mentioned Burt Reynolds as an example.
Oprah replied, “Oh, Burt Reynolds! Oh, gosh! I have a Burt Reynolds story.”
She explained that something happened when she was interviewing Sally Field when she was still younger. The actress starred with Burt in Smokey and the Bandit and they also dated in real life for years.
Oprah revealed, “My big mistake: I asked her, ‘Does Burt sleep with his toupee on?’ I even say now, I cringe to even think that I asked that question. But I asked it because the producers are like, ‘You have to ask, you have to ask, you have to ask. That’s what everybody wants to know.'”
She continued on saying, “And so I asked it, and she went cold on me. She shut down, and I could not get in again.”
Rob understood how she felt and shared his own experience when working with the Oscar winner on ABC’s Brothers & Sisters.
He said, “She’s one of the most amazing actors I’ve ever known, but when Sally goes cold, it’s like Khrushchev in the Cold War. She will bury you.”
Oprah admitted that she shouldn’t have brought that up. She explained, “It was like, ‘Whoa, Sally went cold on me on live TV. I deserved it, I deserved it, I deserved it, ’cause that is such an inappropriate question.”
This isn’t the first time that she talked about that awkward interview with Sally. In fact, she talked about it in the Today show in 2005 as she looked back on her successful career as a TV host and icon. According to her, it was ”awful” and added, “I wouldn’t do it today.”
