Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Open Up About Luxe Brand

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen consider themselves as “discreet people”. The famous twins talked to i-D magazine but just like always, they refrained from talking about their childhood, especially their Full House days and movies when they were still children. Instead, they talked to the outlet about The Row, their luxury fashion brand.

The twins has a humble upbringing as Mary-Kate put it, that’s how they were raised and explained that it’s the reason why they’re “bit out of practice” in terms of interviews.

Another reason why they’re not in mainstream media is because they don’t want to be closely associated with their clothing brand. Ashley said, “We didn’t want to be in front of it, we didn’t necessarily even want to let people know it was us. It was really about the product, to the point where we were like: Who could we get to front this so that we don’t have to?”

Despite their popularity, Ashley explained that they created The Row to make something of themselves. She said, “We had just moved to New York. We were 18 years old and I think what we did know was that we wanted to take that time to take a break from what we were previously doing and to explore things that interested us, and explore what life has to offer…” and Mary-Kate finished by adding, “Creatively.”

Meanwhile, the sisters are “perfectionists” when it comes to designing clothes for their brand. Mary-Kate said they want to create “luxurious” clothing and to them, luxury is “something that makes your life easier.”

She explained, “The idea that you could buy something off the rack, put it on your body and it already feels like a part of your wardrobe, that’s luxury. You don’t even have to think about it.”

She added that their success isn’t surprising as they “had been working in the fashion mass market” so “We have a pretty good idea of what sells, what doesn’t.” They took the risk though by launching their brand without a logo or having themselves as the official faces of it. As Ashley put it, “I think, to this day, you’ll see we really put the product first.”

Model Gigi Hadid said, “They want to put out their art without feeling too exposed or too vulnerable or used for the wrong reasons. They don’t want people showing up like ‘I’m here for the Mary-Kate and Ashley show.’ They want people to come and respect the clothing.”
