Sorry fans but Halsey won’t be doing any press anytime soon.
The new mom had a bad experience with Allure magazine recently and called out the said publication for misgendering them. The artist is known for going by she/they pronouns. In their since-deleted tweets, she wrote, “hey @Allure_magazine. First your writer made a focal point in my cover story my pronouns and you guys deliberately disrespected them by not using them in the article.”
“Then your admin bastardized a quote where I discuss the privilege of being the white child of a black parent + Intentionally used a portion that was the antithesis of the point I was trying to make,” the singer added.
They ended their message by writing, “Do f–king better…?” and later added, “#NoMorePress goodbye.”
Allure published the cover story last July 13 where they referred to Halsey using female pronouns. The outlet received feedback from readers and Halsey’s fans regarding it and tweeted the following day, “We’ve heard your feedback and you’re absolutely right: we messed up. We are adjusting our cover story with Halsey to use both ‘she’ and ‘they’ pronouns.”
In March, Halsey changed their Instagram bio to reflect she/they pronouns. Many fans took notice. Buzzfeed News reported that the singer addressed the news on her Instagram Story where she wrote, “For those asking RE: my updated Instagram bio, I am happy with either pronouns.”
She explained, “The inclusion of ‘they,’ in addition to ‘she,’ feels most authentic to me. If you know me at all you know what it means to me to express this outwardly. Thanks for being the best.”
In February, Halsey shared that their perception regarding gender changed after experiencing what it’s like to be pregnant. She said, “I thought pregnancy would give me very strong, binary feelings about ‘womanhood’ but truly it has leveled my perception of gender entirely. My sensitivity to my body has made me hyper aware of my humanness and that’s all.”
Halsey and her boyfriend Alev Aydin have since welcomed their first child, Ender Ridley Aydin. In one of their family photos, she captioned, “Gratitude. For the most ‘rare’ and euphoric birth. Powered by love.”
