Squid Game is undoubtedly one of the most watched series on Netflix and it’s no surprise that its lead star, Lee Jung-jae, has become a common name in Hollywood. But despite the fame of the series, the actor told Variety in an interview that he hasn’t received any offers yet.
He confirmed during an interview on October 11, “No proposals or requests have come my way. But, if the right one came along, I’d be happy to be in overseas production. It could be fun.”
For those who haven’t seen the series yet, he plays the character of Seong Gi-hun, a divorced father who loves to gamble. One day, he was presented a chance to have his debt paid by joining and completing a mysterious game.
The only problem is that those who lost in the games or failed to participate will be eliminated – permanently.
As Gi-hun played every game, viewers witness his transformation into becoming a respectable and considerate man. Lee’s portrayal of his character is very remarkable and as he predicted, the series will become a big hit worldwide.
He said, “I didn’t expect this kind of success at all when I first boarded Squid Game as a project. But when I read the script, I understood that it contained elements that could resonate with everyone and work outside of Korea.”
It didn’t only become famous around the globe but it’s also becoming Netflix’s “biggest non-English-language show” worldwide based on Netflix’s co-chief executive officer and chief content officer, Ted Sarandos.
Many fans still don’t get it as to why he hasn’t received any Hollywood offers yet as of this moment. However, the actor isn’t bothered at all because he has already established a name for himself in his home country, South Korea.
He said in line with Squid Game’s enormous success, “Nothing much has changed for me as an actor. But Gi-hun’s character changes a lot over the course of the show. It has a large spectrum, which any actor would want to try out at least once in his career. This was possibly the first time I’ve played a character with such a range.”
