    Alec Baldwin’s “Discharged” Prop Gun Kills Crew Member, Injures Director

    Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun while filming on the set of his latest movie, killing a crew member and injuring the director.

    The actor “discharged” the weapon while on the set of Rust on Thursday, October 21. The director of photography, Halyna Hutchins, 42, died while director Joel Souza, 48, is currently in the hospital where he’s being treated for his injury.

    Hutchins was flown to the University of New Mexico Hospital by a chopper where she was pronounced dead while an ambulance took Souza to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center.

    Here’s the full statement from the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Department obtained by Deadline:

    Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the Bonanza Creek Ranch movie set of the western “Rust”, October 21, 2021, when a 911 caller reported a shooting on the set. 

    The sheriff’s office confirms that two individuals were shot on the set of Rust. Halyna Hutchins, 42, director of photography and Joel Souza, 48, director, were shot when a prop firearm was discharged by Alec Baldwin, 68, producer, and actor. 

    Ms. Hutchins was transported, via helicopter, to the University of New Mexico Hospital where she was pronounced dead by medical personnel. Mr. Souza was transported by ambulance to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical center where he is undergoing treatment for his injuries. 

    This investigation remains open and active. No charges have been filed in regard to this incident. Witnesses continue to be interviewed by detectives.

    Further, an official from Santa Fe Sheriff’s Department told the outlet, “Mr. Baldwin was questioned by investigators and released. No arrests or charges have been filed.”

    Baldwin shared a photo of himself on Thursday morning wearing a Western outfit while carrying a leather jacket and cowboy hat. He captioned it, “Back to in person at the office. Blimey…it’s exhausting.”

    Rust is Baldwin’s latest movie which he also co-produced. According to Deadline, it’s about an outlaw, Harland Rust, which is played by the actor. “When his estranged 13-year-old grandson Lucas (Brady Noon) is convicted of an accidental murder and sentenced to hang, Rust travels to Kansas to break him out of prison. Together, the two fugitives must outrun the legendary U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Jensen Ackles) and bounty-hunter Fenton ‘Preacher’ Lang (Travis Fimmel) who are hot on their tail.”

    As for Hutchins, she was a cinematographer who worked in several films including Archenemy and The Mad Hatter. Based on her Instagram bio, she’s a “Restless Dreamer” and at the same time an “Adrenaline Junkie”.
