War and Peace (2016)

This BBC television series directed by Tom Harper is based on Leo Tolstoy’s well-known novel of the same title published in 1867. The mini-series first aired on BBC One and stars Cinderella and Rebecca lead actress Lily James as Natasha, James Norton as Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, and Paul Dano as Pierre Bezukhov. The story revolves around the lives of aristocratic families and circles in Petersburg and Moscow during the Napoleonic Wars. It is mainly a beautiful epic narrating the tales of families and personas deeply entrenched in wars, loss, love, deception, and court maneuverings. It is also so snowy and wintry (mostly!) in this show, so it’s just perfect for the season!
Little Women (2019)

This heartwarming story of family, love, growth, and pursuing one’s dreams from Greta Gerwig’s retelling of the well-loved novel by Louisa May Alcott is just the period piece you need as Christmas approaches. Starring Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Timothee Chalamet, Laura Dern, and Meryl Streep, the story revolves around the lives of the March sisters (Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy) and how they navigate their lives amidst the terrain of love, loss, wars, and personal desires.
Poldark (2015)
Aside from the well-loved show, Outlander (based on books by Diana Gabaldon), another gorgeous Georgian Era period drama can be found in Poldark, starring Love, Wedding, Repeat and Jack the Giant Slayer actress Eleanor Tomlinson as Demelza, Aidan Turner as Ross, and Heida Reed as Elizabeth. After coming back from an almost near-death experience as a soldier in America, Ross(Turner) tries to reclaim and rebuild his life only to find out that the lover he left behind, Elizabeth Chynoweth (Reed) is now engaged to his cousin. Ross, however, finds new love in Demelza (Tomlinson) even though it is much antagonized by the “respectable” society around them. Will their love be enough?
Persuasion (2007)
Done with Pride and Prejudice and Emma for the holidays? Watch another of Jane Austen’s heart-gripping love stories in Persuasion. The story revolves around the broken engagement of Anne Elliott and Royal Navy Captain Frederick Wentworth and their reunion after several years apart (just full of angst and unresolved feelings!). Anne was persuaded by a family friend, Lady Russell, back then to give up the engagement with Wentworth because of his financial prospects, and so she did. She didn’t know, however, that he would come to haunt her eight years later…
Victoria (2016)
Created by Daisy Goodwin, this series starring Doctor Who actress Jenna Coleman revolves around the life of Queen Victoria- from the death of her Uncle, King William IV, to her coronation as the Queen, and eventual married life with her cousin Prince Albert of Coburg. This show is just perfect to watch for the holidays, and a great period show if you are obsessed with royalty and anything Victorian.
