Nicolas Cage welcomed the New Year with great news!
The actor and his wife Riko Shibata are pregnant! This will be the 53-year-old actor’s third child. He has two sons, Weston, 31, and Kal-El, 16, from his past relationships.
The actor’s rep told People, “The parents-to-be are elated!”
Their big news came after almost a year since they surprised fans that they’ve tied the knot in Las Vegas. On February 16, the couple got wed at the Wynn Hotel. Cage wore a Tom Ford tux while the bride wore a handmade Japanese bridal kimono. It was an intimate wedding where they exchanged traditional vows with a bit of poetry. Shibata is the actor’s fifth wife.
Cage and Shibata’s love story is living proof that distance indeed makes the heart grow fonder. In August 2020, the actor announced his engagement to Shibata. That was the time when the coronavirus pandemic prevented couples from having a proposal in person.
Cage shared details on Marc Coppola’s radio show, saying, “She left New York and went back to Kyoto, Japan, and I went back to Nevada and I haven’t seen her for six months. We’re really happy together and we’re really excited to spend that time together so I finally just said, ‘Look, I wanna marry you,’ and we got engaged on FaceTime.”
And what about the engagement ring? Well, the actor gave her a black diamond ring which he mailed to Japan.
“Her favorite color is black so she wanted the black gold, and the black diamond,” he explained. “I customized and personalized it and I actually sent it to her FedEx.”
The two made their red carpet debut months after their wedding during the premiere of the actor’s film, “Pig”, held at the Nuart Theatre in L.A.It was followed by another rare appearance in West Hollywood in November at the 2021 GQ Men of the Year party.
So how did they meet? The couple was introduced to each other by mutual friends during his filming of Prisoners of the Ghostland in Japan. They’ve been together after the dissolution of the actor’s marriage to Erika Koike in 2019, which only lasted for four days.
