Many Twitter users weren’t happy about Gal Gadot playing Cleopatra with some believing that an African actress should lead in the film while others claimed that the famous queen had Greek heritage.

One Twitter user named Sameera Khan wrote, “Which Hollywood dumbass thought it would be a good idea to cast an Israeli actress as Cleopatra (a very bland looking one) instead of a stunning Arab actress like Nadine Njeim?”

As a matter of fact, Gerald Kadish who teaches Near Eastern studies at Binghamton University told Newsweek that Cleopatra’s mom remains unknown and her siblings are also believed to be Greco-Macedonian.

Meanwhile, there were those who were confused why Gadot received a lot of backlash from others. One commented, “Why are y’all mad? She was Greek.”

Also, Nazanin Boniadi who is an actor and at the same time a human rights advocate also showed support to the actress. He wrote, “Cleopatra was ethnically Macedonian Greek. Stop shaming @GalGadot and dividing people based on falsities. Reserve your outrage for world issues.”

There were those who believed that Gadot’s ancestry has nothing to do with her role. They set Vivien Leigh and Elizabeth Taylor as examples of actresses who had portrayed the Queen of the Nile in movies before. Others also defended Gadot saying her casting was “anti-Semitic” because she’s Jewish.

Sofia Aziz, a researcher of Egypt, was more worried about the authenticity of the other elements in the movie than the casting. She tweeted, “As an Egyptologist I’m more interested in the accuracy of the content. I hope Cleopatra is depicted accurately and it’s not another movie centred around the men in her life.”

Gal Gadot is 2020’s third highest-paying actress and is featured in the trailer of Wonder Woman 1984. The movie is expected to be released in December 2020.

She told Parade in May that it had been an amazing journey that she never anticipated and that she enjoyed every moment of bringing Wonder Woman to life. She said, “But I will say that when I was told I was going to have my own movie, I was super nervous. I’d never been the title.”

Gadot added, “It was important for me to bring something good to the world and to bring a character that matters.”
