Netflix never runs out of shows to keep people hooked on their screen. Their new Netflix original series, The Queen’s Gambit, proved to be another favorite that will make viewers beg for more. It tells of Elizabeth “Beth” Harmon, a gifted chess prodigy, who later on became one of the best chess players in the whole world despite a rather bumpy journey towards success. It’s based on a novel, The Queen’s Gambit, authored by Walter Tevis in 1983.
The series stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Bet. Her character had to deal with many obstacles including family trauma, addiction, and her struggles from playing chess in an orphanage to competing with Russian grandmasters.
If you haven’t seen it yet, here are some reasons that will inspire you to binge-watch the series this weekend:
The Cast is Amazing
In addition to Taylor-Joy, Harry Melling who played Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter series is also present together with Thomas Brodie-Sangster from Love Actually where he played a young kid. These two were Taylor-Joy’s competitors and later became her best buddies. Meanwhile, Taylor-Joy’s portrayal of Beth is captivating especially as you watch her transform from a geeky teen to an ice princess of a woman.
It’s an Inspiring Story of a Woman in a Man’s World
Beth experienced being underestimated by men, especially those who also play chess. In fact, people laughed at her for competing without a ranking on her first chess tournament. Her strong personality and innate talent in playing chess blew her competitors and the audience away. She travels to different countries playing chess and those who doubted her offered their support.
The Chess Scenes are Realisitc
If there’s one thing that sets aside The Queen’s Gambit from other sports-inspired movies is that the chess scenes are realistic. The matches will give you the same feeling as when you’re watching an action movie. The chess pieces move and fly across the board with every move of the players’ hands. It’s actually thrilling to watch not only for chess gurus but also for those who haven’t seen an actual chess game before. The players clash in exciting games that’ll leave viewers at the edge of their seat.- Advertisement -
There are other reasons as well on why The Queen’s Gambit has become a must-see after only a few days of being released. The setting takes you back to the ‘50s and ‘60s and their costumes also reflect the kind of fashion they have back then. Over-all, this is one Netflix Original series worthy of watching.
